It’s hard to believe that those great crowd scenes in Bohemian Rhapsody were in fact mostly green screen. But they were. People who haven’t used green screen think it doesn’t work, because they only notice it when it doesn’t work. But when it does work, like here,it seems real. It’s fantastic because it opens a whole new realm for the filmmaker and if you recognize the plasticity of the medium you can create any world you want or re-create it. But what people really fail to realize is that green screen can actually save a great deal of money, particularly when you don’t have to bring in 100,000 extras. Now those extras in this sequence where shot in a different time and place and then transposed in the post production on the green screen. Still, much cheaper than shooting with all of them on the day.
