The Mortal Kombat 11 reveal on Thursday in Los Angeles went over well. Enthusiastic, hardcore fans packed the venue along with celebrity cosplay figures including the WWE's Xavier Woods (Shao Khan), Kofi Kingston (Shang Tsung) and Zelina Vega (Jade). There were others in attendance as Scorpion and more. NetherRealm and Warner Bros. spared no expense it seemed, and collectively, it showed off the upcoming game in style. Here are the 15 most significant takeaways from the reveal event.

Ronda Rousey is Sonya Blade

It might have been the worst-kept secret in gaming over the past 48 hours, but NetherRealm and Warner Bros. confirmed Ronda Rousey as Sonya Blade. What does that mean in a video game format? Well, Rousey voiced the character, and some of Sonya Blade's moves have Rousey's signature all over them. Yes, she does a rolling armbar with signature KM gore.

The Gore is in Full Effect

Speaking of gore, what we saw in the MK11 preview was even gorier than previous versions in the series. Many of the moves make you cringe when you look at them for the first time, and we're not just talking about finishers.

Fatalities are Even More Cinematic

The Fatalities are as over-the-top as you'd expect and the developers rendered each with amazing detail. The slow-motion and overall presentation helps to drive home the brutality of every move. The game looks beautiful in every way.

The Story Seems Interesting and Layered

NetherRealm certainly seemed to follow a building plan similar to the one it used with Injustice and Injustice 2. The story appears to have depth and it picks up right after the events of Mortal Kombat 9. After watching the opening cinematic, I felt confident a Mortal Kombat animated movie with this cinematics, a similar dialog and voice acting, could be a hit with fans. Mostly, that's what those who play through the entire story will see.

Baraka and Skarlet are Back

We know for sure Baraka and Skarlet are making their returns to the game. This will be the first MK game Skarlet has been in since Mortal Kombat 9, and Baraka sees his first console action since the rebooted Mortal Kombat in 2011. He and Jade were mobile exclusives for Mortal Kombat X and XL.

There are a variety of changes that users can make to the character's weapons and costumes. In the video with Baraka and Scorpion, you can see several costumes that completely change the look of the characters. Again, this is another winning concept brought over from the Injustice series.

Dark Raiden Will Be Included

Which Raiden do you prefer? If you like Dark Raiden, you'll be happy to learn that presence is the one that NetherRealm showed during the reveal. However, with the level of customization available, I expect to see multiple forms of Raiden and other characters.

Confirmed Characters

Sonya Blade

Shinnok (shown in a cinematic screen)

Liu Kang (shown in a cinematic screen)

Kung Lao (shown in a cinematic screen)

Kronika (shown in a cinematic screen)

Shao Khan

Secret Fighter

Toward the end of the reveal, host Josh Gray and community manager Tyler Lansdown teased a secret character. It looked like Smoke, but it probably wasn't considering the character has undergone a bit of a transformation. We'll find out for sure later this month.

Looks Like 25 Fighters to Start

There were a total of 25 fighter slots available on the character select screen. Some may think that's a little sparse, but there looks to be room to add a few rectangles for DLC.

Separating the Meters

The reveal didn't teach us much about gameplay mechanics, but we did learn that MK11 is taking a fresh approach to the meter system that is such a big part of fighting games. It is separating the meters into offensive (horizontal), defensive (vertical) and health. Once your character is down to 30 percent of their health, it activates the fatal blow attack, which is similar to the supercharged attack in Injustice.

Flawless Blocks = Parry System

NetherRealm has included a new parry system called Flawless Blocks. If you time your block command correctly, it will create a short freeze time for the attacking fighter that allows for a powerful counter. I love that concept in fighting games and wish that more developers would include it in their titles.

Kollector's Edition

There will be an MK11 Kollector's Edition, and it comes with a real-life Scorpion mask. It's hard to see all of the details, but here is a look at the short video displaying the contents. Also, anyone who pre-orders any edition of the game will gain beta access, which begins on March 28, and the playable version of Shao Khan.

Kombat Kasts are Coming Back

The re-launch of Kombat Kasts is on the way, per Landsdown. NetherRealm has scheduled the first one for January 30 at 4 pm ET. Landsdown promised the event would feature more surprises and news about the upcoming game.

Geras Looks Amazing

Of all the characters introduced, Geras, the servant of Kronika, was the most impressive. He's behemoth whose powerful strikes and slams made me say "whoa" out loud as I watched the reveal. At this point, he's the new character I'm most looking forward to using in the new game.
